Supercharging Marketing with AI: Insights from MediaOn

Updated: Feb 15

In today’s fast-evolving digital landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept—it’s an everyday reality for marketing professionals. To understand how AI is transforming the daily workflow of digital marketers, I spoke with Mr. Justin Choy, Creative Director at MediaOn, a leading digital agency known for its innovative campaigns across Hong Kong and China.

Morning: Data-Driven Beginnings

For Justin and his team, every day starts with coffee—and data. “We let AI run overnight, so by morning, we have fresh reports and insights ready,” Justin explains. This automation means what once took hours or days is now available instantly. It frees up time for strategic thinking rather than manual number crunching. What would usually take several hours or even days manually can now be done automatically when no one is in the office. This speeds up the process and allows MediaOn to bring faster results to its clients. They can spend their energy on devising solutions while leaving routine tasks to AI. "The most important benefit of letting AI do the analysis is the fact that it isn't biased," states Justin. AI enables the data to be objective, allowing the company to make data-driven decisions rather than being influenced by personal opinions.

The Role of AI in Campaign Planning

As a company that is often tasked with creating new campaigns, AI has helped enhance the planning process. While human creativity and decision-making remain the foundation of their work, AI has helped accelerate the more strategic elements. MediaOn has utilized generative AI to enhance Search Engine Optimization (SEO) rankings for the campaigns. Justin reminded us that human supervision is still necessary to avoid any errors and "AI-written" penalties. AI also serves as a news alert system, notifying the team of the latest trends whenever it notices a new pattern. This allows the company to implement trendy solutions into its campaigns.

AI Tools in Action

MediaOn has developed its own AI system using n8n, which connects to various platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit. This system tracks social media engagement, analyzes comments in real time, and automates responses when needed, highlighting anything that requires urgent attention. QR codes used for voluntary questionnaires during on-site campaigns enable their AI systems to analyze participant data instantly.

A Suite of Generative AI Tools

For campaign management, the team utilizes a combination of generative AI tools, including Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, DALL·E, Sora, and Mosaic for visuals, as well as ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and POE for content creation. These tools help with everything from SEO optimization to content personalization and trend detection. The integration of these tools enables a seamless workflow, enhancing creativity and efficiency.

When AI Meets Creativity: The Limits and Power of AI Collaboration

Despite AI’s growing role, human creativity remains at the heart of MediaOn’s campaigns. “Our creative team starts with their own ideas, then uses AI to refine or expand on them,” Justin says. Designers use AI to generate variations or speed up tedious tasks, but the mood and narrative always come from people. “AI is an enhancer, not a creator. It can’t replace the soul and emotional touch that make campaigns resonate,” he emphasizes. While automation powers MediaOn’s analytical backbone, creativity remains the company’s strength, an area where AI plays a more subtle role.

The Balance Between AI and Human Input

The collaboration between AI and human creativity is essential. AI can provide valuable insights and streamline processes, but it cannot replicate the nuanced understanding that comes from human experience. This balance is crucial for creating campaigns that truly connect with audiences.

Real-Time Optimization and Crisis Management

AI’s ability to monitor campaigns in real time is a game-changer. For example, during a social media campaign, MediaOn’s AI detected a sudden spike in toxic comments. By analyzing user behavior, the system revealed that many negative comments were likely from competitors using fake accounts. This allowed the team to respond quickly, report the abuse, and protect the brand’s reputation—a process that would have taken much longer without AI. What could have been a reputational crisis was instead turned into a lesson in resilience and the importance of real-time data analysis.

Learning from Challenges

Every challenge presents an opportunity for growth. The ability to swiftly address issues not only protects the brand but also enhances the team's crisis management skills. This proactive approach is essential in today’s fast-paced digital environment.

The Human Touch: Oversight and Ethics

While AI accelerates analysis and automates routine tasks, human oversight is essential. AI can produce generic visuals, repeat clichés, or hallucinate facts. AI-written content poses a risk of being flagged and negatively impacts SEO if quality control is compromised. The line between inspiration and imitation can blur when prompts are poorly crafted. For more complex experiential campaigns, AI agents are also not helpful to the creative team, as they rely on emotional sentiment that AI may be unable to incorporate.

Ensuring Quality and Ethical Standards

In MediaOn, every AI-generated asset is reviewed by editors to ensure accuracy, originality, and alignment with the campaign’s goals. Ethical considerations are also top of mind, especially when using AI for audience targeting and content personalization. Maintaining high standards is crucial for preserving the integrity of the brand and its messaging.

Skills for the Future

Looking ahead, Justin believes that digital marketers must blend technical know-how with creative thinking. “Understanding how to prompt AI, interpret data, and collaborate with creative teams will be crucial,” he says. AI will continue to evolve, but the ability to connect emotionally with audiences—and to use AI as a tool rather than a crutch—will set great marketers apart.

Embracing Continuous Learning

The landscape of digital marketing is constantly changing. Staying updated with the latest AI advancements and marketing trends is vital for success. Embracing a mindset of continuous learning will empower marketers to adapt and thrive.

Conclusion

At MediaOn, AI is a powerful assistant that accelerates workflows, surfaces insights, and enables more creative freedom. But as Justin and his team demonstrate, the heart of effective marketing still depends on human judgment, taste, and empathy. For students and professionals alike, mastering both AI tools and creative collaboration is the key to thriving in the digital marketing world.
